Principle of Operation

For a detailed description of the communications network, refer to the relevant description and operations section of the workshop manual.

Inspection and Verification

. Verify the customer concern.

. Visually inspect for obvious faults.
Some of the networks are hard-wired and can be diagnosed using a multimeter and the electrical guides once the general area is identified from the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

The media oriented system transport (MOST) network carries the entertainment and information system data through fibre optic cables requiring different diagnosis and repair techniques to those many of us are used to. Refer to the MOST diagnosis section following the DTC index.

General
  • Fuses
  • Harnesses and connectors
  • Routing and condition of fibre optic harnesses
  • Correct engagement of optical connectors
  • Control modules
  • Sensors

. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.

. Use the approved diagnostic system or a scan tool to retrieve any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) before moving onto the DTC index.
Because the networks cover the entire vehicle, a complete vehicle read of DTCs is recommended

:
Generic scan tools may not read the codes listed, or may read only 5-digit codes. Match the 5 digits from the scan tool to the first 5 digits of the 7-digit code listed to identify the fault (the last 2 digits give extra information read by the manufacturer-approved diagnostic system).

Lost communication codes

Lost communication codes mean that a module is not receiving CAN information from another module, but that its own transmissions are OK.

These codes typically indicate a break in the circuit.

Where a lost communication code is set, check the customer complaint to see if there are reports of warning lamps, etc for other vehicle systems (which may seem unconnected with the module setting the code), and carry out a complete vehicle code read.

Review the codes stored in the vehicle to identify any trends, such as a number of modules reporting having lost communication with a particular module.

:
Do not interpret timeout codes as a module or circuit fault. These codes are sometimes set when the networks are busy and a module cannot get its signal onto the network in the time allowed.

Check the suspect module power and ground supplies, and the CAN circuits between modules and repair as necessary. For additional information, refer to the electrical guides.

Investigate, repair and clear all stored codes and retest for normal operation.

Bus off codes

The references to bus and its condition refer to the network concerned and the modules on that network.

If a code says that a module is bus off, this means that the module has detected errors, and has disabled CAN transmission and disconnected itself from the network to allow the rest of the network to function. At this point, the bus off code is set.

As the most common cause of bus off codes is a short circuit in the CAN network, check the CAN circuits using the electrical guides before condemning a module.

Software version NNV502520 had an issue whereby any of the following Communication Lines (listed below) could log a fault if there was a sudden, large dip in battery voltage whilst the output was active. These resulting DTCs only required a repair action if there is a specific reported fault against the relevant system. Software version NNV502990 onwards corrected this issue.

Media oriented systems transport (MOST) diagnosis

Overview

The basic guidelines are covered in the description and operation section, such as not attempting to repair fibre optic cables, but additional precautions include:

MOST tester

Before connecting the tester to the network, turn on the unit and check that the red power on indicator is illuminated.

If not, the battery should be replaced before using the tester.

2+0 Self-test

. Set the connector selector switch to 2+0.

. Select beep or LED on the tester, depending on your choice of indicator.

. Turn the tester on and check the operation of the power indicator.

. Using the 2+0 loop-back lead from the kit, push it into the 2+0 connector housing in the tester until it clicks into place.

. Press the red test button in the center of the tester.

. Depending on your choice in step 2, the tester will give either an audible tone or a green light.
If the tester continues to give a tone or light after the test button is released this does not indicate a fault, only that there is a signal feed-back within the tester which will stop when the loop-back lead is removed.
If the tester continues to give a tone or light after the test button is released this does not indicate a fault, only that there is a signal feed-back within the tester which will stop when the loop-back lead is removed.

2+4 Self-test

Carry out the self-test in the same way as for 2+0, but using the 2+4 loop-back lead and select 2+4 on the connector selector switch.

Vehicle diagnosis

: Make sure the tester is not connected to the MOST network when either switching the tester on or switching between 2+0 and 2+4, as the tester emits a brief pulse of light which could introduce a fault into the network.

. Use the approved diagnostic system or a scan tool to retrieve any DTCs.

. Set the connector selector switch to 2+0.

. Disconnect the intermediate fibre optic cable connector and connect the male half to the tester connector at the top of the unit using the adaptor in the kit.

. Turn the tester on and check the operation of the power indicator.

. Set the LED/beep selector to LED.

. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

. If the green LED is active, a signal has been received indicating that the first half of the optical ring is functioning.

. If the green LED is NOT active, no signal has been received indicating that the first half of the optical ring is NOT functioning.
A ring break code should be set as a result of this. Use the approved diagnostic system to trace the fault and clear the code.
